Herbs and vegetables indoors: light, water, air
Sowing, cuttings, NFT and DWC hydroponics, EC and pH, plus grow box ventilation: a plain guide to keeping herbs and vegetables producing indoors.
A pot of basil on a kitchen sill will bolt and stop within a season, while a small indoor setup with the right light, a measured nutrient solution and moving air can keep cutting after cutting coming for months. The difference is not the plant, it is the control of three things: how much light reaches the leaves, what is dissolved in the water, and how fast the air moves through the space. Get those three roughly right and indoor growing becomes a routine of small weekly tasks rather than a gamble.
Start with what the plant needs, not with the equipment
Indoor growing fails most often because the light is too weak and the air too still, not because the fertilizer was wrong. A windowsill facing south can carry leafy herbs through winter at low latitudes, but at higher latitudes the day length drops below what basil, mint or rosemary need to keep producing. A cheap light meter, or a phone app checked against one, tells you more in five minutes than a season of guessing. Aim for the light to fall on the leaves, not on the wall behind the pot, and raise the lamp as the plants grow so the top leaves do not scorch.
Water is the second variable. In soil, the rule is simple: the top inch dries, then water until it runs out the bottom, then wait. In a hydroponic system the same rule becomes a number, and the number is measured with two instruments, an EC meter and a pH meter. Sowing and cuttings for a continuous harvest
Continuous harvest does not mean one enormous plant. It means overlapping generations. Sow a small tray every two to three weeks rather than a whole packet in March. Leafy herbs such as basil and mint respond well to this, and so do quick salad leaves. The tray you sow in week one is being cut in week five while the tray from week three is still a pair of seed leaves.
Cuttings are faster than seed for woody herbs. Rosemary, mint and oregano root readily from a soft tip cutting about four inches long, stripped of the lower leaves, stood in water or in a moist perlite mix. Change the water every couple of days or the stem rots before it roots. Once roots are an inch long, move the cutting into its final pot or into the system. Mint is the exception to almost every rule: it spreads by runners and will crowd out anything sharing its container, so give it its own pot.
Peppers and courgettes are slower and hungrier. They need more light, more space and more nutrients than a basil plant, and courgettes in particular need hand pollination indoors because there are no bees. A small brush moved from flower to flower in the morning does the job. Plan for these to occupy their space for months, not weeks.
What are NFT and DWC, and how do EC and pH fit in?
NFT, nutrient film technique, runs a thin film of nutrient solution down a slightly sloped channel. Roots sit in the channel, partly in the film and partly in air, which is why the slope and the flow rate matter: too deep and the roots drown, too shallow and they dry. DWC, deep water culture, does the opposite. The roots hang in a reservoir of aerated solution, and an air pump with a stone keeps the water oxygenated. DWC is more forgiving for a beginner because a pump failure gives hours of warning, while an NFT channel can dry out faster.
Both systems live or die on two readings. EC, electrical conductivity, measures how much dissolved nutrient is in the water. Too low and the plant starves; too high and the roots burn and the leaves edge brown. pH measures acidity, and it matters because nutrients are only available to the roots within a narrow band, roughly 5.5 to 6.5 for most herbs and vegetables in hydroponics. Outside that band the nutrients are present but locked away. Calibrate both meters against their reference solutions before trusting them, and recheck every few weeks. Tap water varies enormously by region, which is why many growers start from filtered or reverse osmosis water and add back a nutrient mix, rather than adjusting tap water that already carries its own minerals.
Substrates change the schedule. Rockwool holds a lot of water and needs a gentle first soak and a lower starting EC. Clay pebbles drain freely and suit DWC baskets. Coco coir behaves more like soil and buffers pH somewhat. Whichever you use, rinse it and check the runoff before planting into it.
How do you keep a grow box from overheating or going stale?
A grow box is a small closed volume with a lamp inside it, which means heat and humidity build up quickly. The basic pattern is an extraction fan pulling air out at the top, a passive intake low down, and enough ducting to reach a window or a filter. Air should be exchanged several times an hour, and the exact figure depends on the volume of the box and the wattage of the lamp. A timer running the fan on the same schedule as the light is the simplest arrangement.
Temperature and humidity are read together. A thermostat or a combined controller turns the fan up when the box gets hot. A hygrometer shows when humidity climbs, which happens after watering and during the dark period. High humidity in a crowded box invites mould on leaves and buds, and a small dehumidifier or simply more air movement usually fixes it. A clip fan inside the box keeps air moving across the leaves, which strengthens stems and discourages the still, damp pockets where problems start.
Light leaks matter during the dark period for any plant grown for flowers or fruit, though leafy herbs are more tolerant. Timers should be checked occasionally, because a stuck timer that leaves the light on for twenty four hours will stall fruiting plants and confuse the schedule you built everything else around.
Pests, and the weekly check that catches them early
The most useful habit indoors is a five minute inspection once a week: lift a few leaves, look at the undersides, and check the growing tips. Spider mites show as fine webbing and pale stippling on the upper leaf surface. Aphids cluster on new growth. Fungus gnats rise from wet substrate, which usually means the medium is staying too wet between waterings. Whitefly scatters when a plant is disturbed.
Catching any of these at the first sighting means a spray of water, a wipe, or a yellow sticky trap may be enough. Left for two weeks in a warm box, the same problem needs a treatment programme. Quarantine any new plant for a week before it joins the others, and keep the floor and the reservoir lid clean. A grow room is a small ecosystem, and the fastest response is always the cheapest.
Matching the setup to the space you actually have
A single shelf with two pots of mint and a cutting jar is a legitimate indoor garden. A four foot tent with an NFT channel and a reservoir is another. The method should follow the space, the electricity you are willing to pay for, and the time you will realistically spend. Herbs reward small, frequent attention: a pinch here, a top up there, a meter reading on Sunday. Vegetables reward patience and light. Neither rewards buying equipment before understanding what the plant is doing, which is why the reading comes first and the shopping list second.
